Holiday family meals at school cancelled

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Hamilton County school officials say compliance with new federal dietary rules is forcing an end to a tradition of family holiday meals at school.

Elementary schools used to choose if and when to invite parents and community members for lunches before Thanksgiving and Christmas. As many as 400 guests have been served in the past.

There will be turkey on Nov. 13 and a ham lunch on Dec. 12, but only for students and staff.

County schools nutrition director Carolyn Childs told the Chattanooga Times Free Press ( ) there are too many nuances to the new meal pattern to continue the community holiday lunches.

Parent Julie Saunders said she is concerned about poorer families, saying the school holiday meals might have been one of few good meals together.
