Home failed to call police when resident beaten

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Police and state reports on the fatal beating of as assisted living facility resident show the home failed to report the assault to police and cleaned up the crime scene.

The Tennessean cites the documents in the Dec. 24, 2011, incident in which 83-year-old Donald Reeder was beaten with a cane at Elmcroft of Twin Hills in the Madison district of Nashville. Reeder died on Jan. 10.

Reeder and his 89-year-old roommate, Orville Hayes, both had Alzheimer's disease. Hayes was not charged and died Feb. 12.

Reports by the Metro Nashville Police Department and the Tennessee Department of Health stated police learned of the assault when the ambulance driver taking Reeder to a hospital called them.

The newspaper stated owners of Elmcroft did not respond to requests for comment.
