NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Humane Society of the United States says it paid a $10,000 reward to the horse industry participant who provided critical evidence that led to a conviction in a Tennessee horse soring case.

The society did not identify the recipient in a statement Tuesday from Washington.

Thirty-nine-year-old Barney Davis of Lewisburg, Tenn., was sentenced Monday to 12 months in prison for horse soring violations and fined $4,000 by U.S. District Judge Harry S. Mattice of Chattanooga. At his sentencing, Davis described mechanical devices and chemical irritants used to sore horses to force them to use an exaggerated gait in the show ring during Tennessee Walking Horse competition.

The society said it was gratified its reward program helped bring an offender to justice.

Davis had pleaded guilty last November.
