I-40 tunnel near NC-Tennessee line to get checkup

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Work on the tunnels on Interstate 40 near the North Carolina-Tennessee state line will disrupt traffic next week.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported the inspections of tunnel lighting in Haywood County could take up to two weeks.

The state transportation department says traffic will be reduced to a single lane Monday and Tuesday on the westbound lanes between Exit 7 and the Tennessee state line.

The tunnel on I-40 eastbound between the state line and Exit 7 will be closed Monday and traffic will be diverted.

On Tuesday, officials may close the eastbound tunnel or traffic will be reduced to one lane at the other eastbound I-40 tunnel between Exit 7 and Exit 15.

Traffic will be reduced to a single lane on Wednesday between Exit 7 and Exit 15.
