JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (AP) -- A committee of the Washington County Commission has given initial approval to spending $1 million for 10 additional school resource officers.
The Johnson City Press reported the vote Tuesday night by the safety committee sends the measure on to the commission's budget committee.
Sheriff Ed Graybeal told committee members the cost would be nearly $980,000 per officer, including about $41,000 in salary plus benefits, training, vehicles, uniforms and equipment.
The county currently has six officers in the public schools. If the added officers are approved, an officer could be stationed at each school in the county.
