MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The Jackson City Council has approved a new mutual assistance agreement with the University of Memphis Lambuth Campus.
The pact between the Jackson Police Department and University Police Services will effectively increase the campus police jurisdiction to neighborhoods around the university.
City police Capt. Thom Corley told The Jackson Sun the agreement gives U of M officers jurisdiction throughout the city, but they won't be expected to patrol far away from the university. Corley said the agreement also lets city officers pursue suspects onto campus and come in for assistance to university police if there is a major incident on campus.
Council approval of the agreement Tuesday was unanimous
