DAYTON, Tenn. (AP) -- Rhea County jurors have acquitted former state Rep. Jim Cobb, who was accused of assaulting a woman in a wheel chair.

According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, the not guilty verdict was returned Tuesday night after a Circuit Court jury deliberated for about an hour.

Cobb said the verdict spoke for itself and said the charge was politically motivated.

The Republican from Spring City lost in the party primary to Ron Travis, who had no opponent in the general election.

Wanda Sue Goins told deputies she feared for her safety, saying Cobb got out of his pickup at a Dayton school and tried to knock down a Travis sign as Goins campaigned for Travis. Goins said she was afraid Cobb was going to hit her.
