WHITLEY Co., Ky. (WVLT/WYMT) -- A Whitley County High School teacher was critically injured Tuesday morning while trying to break up a fight between two students. Dewayne Bunch also represents Williamsburg in the Kentucky State Legislature.
According to police a fight erupted between two freshmen, ages 15 and 16, in the school cafeteria around 7:30 a.m. While trying to intervene, Bunch, who teaches math and science, suffered a head injury.
He was taken to Baptist Regional Medical Center in Corbin where hospital officials tell us he is in "extreme" critical condition. He is now in a coma at UK hospital in Lexington.
Police say the two students will be charged with first-degree assault.
Representative Bunch had served less than a year in the general assembly. He represents all of Whitley and part of Laurel Counties.
There was a county-wide moment of silence at 10 a.m.
The Whitley County Sheriff's Department is investigating.
