Lane College teacher program loses state approval

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee State Board of Education has withdrawn its approval of Lane College's teacher licensure program.

The Jackson Sun reported Monday that the board made its decision during a meeting held Friday after determining that the program did not meet criteria in the areas of teacher candidates' knowledge and skill levels.

Lane College Vice President for Academic Affairs Deborah Buchanan said the decision gives the five students who remain in the college's professional teacher licensure program six months to complete the program.

Those students who don't complete the program will need to transfer to another college to finish their degrees in order to be licensed.

Buchanan said college officials were disappointed with the board's decision and responded appropriately to the claims of the board.
