Lane College marks 130 years

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- Lane College is celebrating 130 years.

About 250 people attended an address Sunday afternoon by Senior Bishop Thomas L. Hoyt Jr., who is a Lane alumnus.

Hoyt exhorted his audience to understand they were saved by hope and faith and must do what God calls them to do, according to The Jackson Sun.

His speech paid tribute to university founder Bishop Isaac Lane, who started the school to educate newly free slaves.

The private liberal arts university is affiliated with the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and confers baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences.
