KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- If a shoplifter steals from your store, can you shoot them? A local liquor store employee learned the hard way, that the answer is 'no'.
Nearly every night for the last six years, Harold Williams held watch over Adobe Wine and Spirits. Almost every week, he's stopped at least one shoplifter from stealing.
Williams said, "If you don't, there isn't going to be anyone to do it for you."
But on Monday night, no matter how hard Harold tried, a shoplifter got away with hundreds of dollars in alcohol.
Harold said, "He had 400 dollars worth of stuff and if you let people get away with stuff like that you might as well go home."
Outside the store, Harold made a move that would land him in jail. He pulled a gun and shot at the man as he ran away.
Harold said, "I shouldn't have shot if I had a do over I wouldn't have done it there's no use in killing someone over a bottle of liquor."
Harold Williams was charged with reckless endangerment, and carrying a gun without a permit.
Police said he fired his gun across a busy road and into a business. They said there was no reason to shoot because the shoplifter never threatened anyone.
