Local high school raises money to build Kenyan school

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (WVLT)-- It only took five months but Morristown West High School came together to raise over $8,000 to help a community thousands of miles away.

The school partnered with Free the Children, an organization that helps kids around the world.

The goal was to raise enough money to build a school in Kenya where no school exist.

The student body came together and held school-wide fundraisers and asked each student to donate $6.00 out of their own pocket.

Dr. Moorhouse, Morristown West High School Principal said "For many of us; $6.00 isn't a lot of money. It's about the amount we pay for fries and a coke at a local fast food restaurant."

State, local, city and house representatives joined to thank the student body for raising $8,835.00.

All the money will go to build a school for about 350 children in Kenya.

Next year they hope to raise enough money to build a water well for the same community.
