MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A man charged in the fatal shooting of a Memphis city police officer has waived a preliminary hearing, allowing the first-degree murder charge against him to go to a grand jury.

According to The Commercial Appeal, 21-year-old Treveno Campbell did not speak during a hearing Thursday. He is being held without bond in the Dec. 14 shooting that killed Officer Martoiya Lang and wounded Officer William Vrooman.

Defense attorney Bill Massey waived his client's hearing, allowing him access immediately to witness statements in the case.

The officers were shot while serving a drug warrant. They returned fire, striking Campbell in the leg. Officers also arrested 26-year-old Willie Braddock on drug charges.

Police said they found drugs, cash and a handgun.
