Man shot and killed by Morristown Police identified

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been called in to assist the Morristown Police Department after an officer involved shooting.

Just before 8pm Wednesday night, Morristown police got a call about a man threatening to shoot himself. When officers got to the home on Elm Street they found Joseph Weeks arguing with his girlfriend Alkini Thompson.

Major Michell Jones says Weeks had a gun in his hand and refused to put it down. That's when officer Dustin Jones fired two shots, killing Weeks. Jones is a patrol officer and has worked with the Morristown PD for seven years.

Morristown Police Chief Roger Overholt says the preliminary investigation shows the use of force was necessary.

Officer Jones is on administrative leave for now.

As for Thompson, she's charged with child abuse and telephone harassment. Police say she assaulted her 12-year-old daughter for calling police after Weeks initially threatened to shoot himself.
