Man charged with killing man near Nashville homeless camp

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Metro Nashville Police have charged a man in the killing of one man and the injuring of another at a homeless camp near downtown.

39-year-old Kelly Grimm was charged with criminal homicide and aggravated assault after the attack early Tuesday.

Police arrested Grimm at the makeshift camp near Fort Negley after Brian Benson walked to a convenience store and asked for help.

The 47-year-old Benson said he, Grimm and 54-year-old James M. Clinard had been drinking alcohol and eating hot dogs and that he and Clinard were walking back to their tent when Grimm began hitting Clinard with a blunt object. Benson said Grimm turned on him before again beating Clinard.

Investigators don't have a motive. They said the weapon could have been a rock.
