MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A Memphis-area insurance agent has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his wife four years ago.
The Commercial Appeal reports that a Memphis jury found Joe Caronna guilty Thursday of first-degree murder. Caronna, of the Cordova suburb, was automatically sentenced to life in prison.
His wife, 44-year-old Tina Caronna, was found dead Oct. 27, 2008. Her body was found in the back seat floorboard of the couple's vehicle.
A medical examiner said she was asphyxiated either by suffocation, strangulation or by being positioned in a way that would not allow her to breathe.
Prosecutors said Caronna became a suspect because of his behavior, such as throwing away his wife's birth certificate and having an affair.
Public defenders said he was the target of a sloppy police investigation.
