MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis Police officers have fatally wounded a young man who refused to drop a knife he was holding.
The department said 19-year-old Christian Freeman charged at officers early Tuesday after they told him to drop the weapon. Two officers fired their pistols, striking Freeman, who was pronounced dead a short time later at the Regional Medical Center.
A department spokeswoman said the officers were alerted by a woman who ran to them and said a man was threatening people with a knife at 4th and Beale, near FedEx Forum. The names of the officers were not immediately released, but will be, once they are debriefed about the incident.
Both officers are assigned to the South Main Entertainment District Unit and have been placed on routine leave as an investigation continues.
