Mother sentenced to 10 years for assaulting son

BENTON, Ky. (AP) -- A Tennessee mother who pleaded guilty to assaulting her toddler son and leaving him on an interstate in western Kentucky has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Circuit Clerk Carla Marshall told The Paducah Sun that 30-year-old Cynthia Palmer was sentenced Monday in Marshall County.

Palmer was indicted on charges of first-degree assault, public intoxication, wanton endangerment, DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia last year after police said she struck her 2-year-old son and left him on Interstate 24 after inhaling synthetic drugs.

Palmer's attorney, Jamie Jameson, said his client will serve 85 percent of her sentence before she is eligible for parole.

He said her arrest came at a turbulent time for the family, but Parker is trying to move forward and "make amends with her family."
