Name of combined school system discussed

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The name of the new unified school system in Memphis and Shelby County is yet to be determined. But enough members of the board feel the city name should be part of it that they voted it onto a board agenda.

Another issue didn't get much traction. Commissioner Tomeka Hart asked for a delay on merging the city and county schools for a year, while bills that would allow suburban cities to form their own districts play out in the legislature. The Commercial Appeal reported the board voted it down 6-11.

Shelby County Schools Superintendent John Aitken said if the board is going to rename the school system, it had better be soon. The 2013-14 school year will be under the board's supervision.
