Nashville officer shoots, wounds man in car

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A Metro Nashville police officer has shot and wounded a man who defied an order to keep his hands in the officer's sight.

Police spokesman Don Aaron said Officer Willie Reaves stopped a car with no headlights on Thursday night. Aaron said a woman driving the car acknowledged there was marijuana inside.

Reaves called for backup and warned 31-year-old Travis Sales to keep his hands in sight. When Sales appeared to be reaching under the passenger's seat, Reaves fired once, striking Sales in the face. Sales drove off and showed up later at a hospital. Aaron said Sales' medical condition was listed as critical, but stable.

The woman said Sales had at least a pound of marijuana in the car. It wasn't immediately determined whether he was armed.
