Nashville program recycles 5,000 mattresses

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A special program in Nashville will mark a milestone Wednesday: 5,000 recycled mattresses.

Spring Back Recycling is a partnership between Belmont University and Belmont Church's Isaiah 58 ministry. The program employs workers who were formerly homeless or incarcerated. Additionally, the Davidson County sheriff's office uses inmate work crews to deliver donated mattresses and picks up and hauls away debris. The business also has hired a few low-risk inmates through a work release program.

Mayor Karl Dean and Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall will participate in a ceremony Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the achievement.
