New Bledsoe County prison opens

PIKEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A new state prison has been formally opened in Middle Tennessee.

Officials staged a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday at the Bledsoe County Correctional Complex in Pikeville.

The Tennessee Department of Correction will begin moving inmates into the 430,000-square-foot prison in January. It will house 1,540 inmates and create 450 new jobs.

Correction Commissioner Derrick Schofield said the opening of the new prison will provide some relief to county jails, where many state inmates are currently held.
