(WVLT) -- Parents love to find new and educational ways to play with their children. A new survey reveals that music can be a powerful motivator.
It also shows listening to music during playtime makes children happier, sillier and more excited. Findings also showed that 76% of parents surveyed reported that after they play with their child, they feel more connected and rocking out made them more relaxed. Additionally, 1/3 of children will play longer when music is coupled with play.
We talked with parenting expert and child therapist, Kimberly Clayton Blaine about the results of this survey. She says, "One of the findings we found from the survey were parents and children both respond to music in the same way and also parents really craved new innovative and age appropriate ways to play with their children and they felt quite stressed to have to come up with ideas on their own."
Kimberly says make the music not a separate entity, but a part of the playtime. It should make them happier and it will make the parents more relaxed.
Some ways to get music for playtime is to go to your child's favorite website and download it from there. A popular site to get free downloadable music for children is at Facebook.com/LegoDuplo where that music will incorporate a way for you and your child to play together.
Kimberly is a mother of two boys and suggests some activites like, "...save some cardboard boxes, get in there and cut some windows and doors and maybe make some cars or some spaceships and turn on the tunes and get jammin with the kids. Also, in the hot months we get big tubs of water and we do water play, bring activities outside...we change the environment...we bring music outside on the porch, in the back yard. And another thing we like to do is invite out animals to family movie night."
