No women on park name committee, group complains

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis City Council members say they carefully chose a committee to look at renaming three city parks, choosing a balance of African-American and white members.

According to The Commercial Appeal, gender wasn't considered.

The executive director of the Memphis Area Women's Council asked Mayor A C Wharton how it could be that no women are among the seven members of the committee. Deborah Clubb of the women's group recommended female history professors at the University of Memphis and Rhodes College be added.

Councilman Bill Boyd -- a co-chair of the committee -- said the group could be expanded with City Council approval. It has not met yet.

The panel was formed to consider changing names of parks that now bear Confederate names.
