No group steps forward to run Memphis shelter

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- There have been no takers to Memphis' offer to privatize the city animal shelter.

City Public Services and Neighborhoods director Janet Hooks said no group came to a mandatory meeting on the proposal Jan. 12 and it's now off the table, according to The Commercial Appeal.

The city will now hire a new animal services administrator. Hooks said there are several qualified candidates.

Animal care advocates had called for the shelter to be privatized after a puppy starved to death there in 2009. Three former shelter officials were indicted on animal cruelty charges.

Hooks said she was surprised no one showed up at the meeting and she waited two hours beyond the posted time to be certain there was no interest in taking over the shelter.
