Officers who fatally shot man in car identified

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis police have identified two officers who fatally shot a man in a car earlier this month.

A news release from the Memphis Police Department says officers responded to a loud music disturbance at an apartment complex Jan. 17.

While checking the area, officers found 24-year-old Steven Askew slumped over in a car and went to check on him. Police say he appeared to be unconscious or asleep

Police say officers gave Askew several commands before he armed himself with a handgun.

Police said Tuesday that officers Ned Aufdenkamp and Matthew Dyess fatally shot Askew when he pointed the gun at one of them.

The officers have been relieved of duty with pay pending the investigation's outcome. A lawyer for Askew's relatives has questioned police procedures in the shooting.
