Officials address vermin problem at high school

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- Hamilton County school officials say replacement of Brainerd High School's heating and air-conditioning system may be the reason for its vermin problem.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press () reports students and teachers have reported seeing rat droppings inside the school, as well as snakes being found in and outside the school.

Officials say the $6.2 million replacement of the system may have disturbed the vermin because part of the replacement involved working underground in the school's steam tunnels.

They say they've sent both school system exterminators and outside contractors to address the problem.
