ERWIN, Tenn. (AP) -- Education officials in East Tennessee have approved a new location for a school that was closed due to a large sinkhole that opened near the playground.
The Johnson City Press reports Unicoi County Board of Education decided to place modular classroom on property owned by the district that's near Unicoi County Intermediate School for students who attended Love Chapel Elementary.
Students who attended the school were dispersed among different schools in the county after closing abruptly closing its doors following the discovery of the sinkhole on Aug. 18 by a passerby. The chasm turned out to be 120 feet deep and grew to 25 feet in diameter.
Unicoi County Director of Schools Denise Brown says the goal is to have the new location ready for students in the fall.
