Officials puzzled by suitcase with wires

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Police in Clarksville say they are trying to determine the purpose of a modified suitcase that created a bomb scare in the city.

A resident alerted police late Friday about finding a strange-looking suitcase in a trashcan. Clarksville police spokesman Officer Jim Knoll told The Leaf-Chronicle ( that the hard-shell suitcase had been lined with aluminum foil and outfitted with wires, a small fan, a light bulb, sand and electrical tape.

After finding the object and contacting the FBI, the bomb squad advised residents living within a one-quarter mile area to evacuate.

Knoll said the device was opened and officials found "it was not an explosive or hoax device." They are still investigating to determine its purpose.
