MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Transportation officials are getting ready to replace an 85-year-old viaduct in Memphis that opened the way for eastward growth and is one of the city's oldest active viaducts.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation is beginning to acquire right-of-way-property near the Poplar Boulevard Viaduct for a $14.5 million project to install a new bridge carrying Poplar and Scott Street over a railroad corridor.
The Commercial Appeal reports that the construction is expected to start next year and take about three years.
More than 23,000 cars travel over the viaduct daily, according to a TDOT count in 2011, so officials plan to keep at least one lane open in each direction during construction.
