ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (AP) -- With the Elizabethton-Carter County Veterans War Memorial completed, it's "mission accomplished "for the committee that carried out the project.

According to The Elizabethton Star, a new oversight committee has been appointed to maintain the memorial and the Walk of Honor.

The memorial honors Carter County residents who have been killed in wars. The walk -- made up of inscribed granite bricks -- honors county residents who have served in any branch of the military.

Deacon Bowers headed the memorial committee. He explained that the group's job was done and he had requested Mayor Curt Alexander nominate the oversight committee to oversee lawn mowing, the addition of new bricks and general maintenance.

The project began in 2001. There are 149 blank bricks remaining in the Walk of Honor which families can purchase of $100 each.
