CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- A medical examination shows a Hamilton County toddler lived for nearly five hours after accidentally shooting himself with his grandfather's pistol.
According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, an autopsy on the body of 2-year-old Brennan Nowell revealed the .40-caliber pistol shot entered the boy's body just below his right breast and exited from his upper left breast on the night of Dec. 20.
The medical examiner's report was released Wednesday. The sheriff's office has not released any further information into the incident that occurred at the home of Stan and Janet Nowell in the Harrison community. A sheriff's spokeswoman said the investigation continues.
An initial report said Stan Nowell left the semi-automatic pistol on a chair and the toddler picked it up, causing it to discharge.
