Roane County Brothers Must Pay $5 Million For Shootout

Updated: Thu 4:47 PM, Aug 02, 2012

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. -- A jury has found two Roane County brothers liable for more than $5 million in a shootout that killed a sheriff's deputy and his friend.

The lawsuit was filed by the family of Mike Brown, who was riding with Deputy Bill Jones in May 2006 when the men were involved in a shootout at the rural home of Rocky Joe and Leon Houston.

According to The Knoxville News Sentinel (http://bit.ly/I4OpDE ), neither brother nor any attorney representing them appeared for the trial of the lawsuit in Crossville. The jury returned its finding late Tuesday.

Authorities have said Jones was trying to serve a warrant on Rocky Houston. The brothers said Jones and Brown came to kill them.

The brothers were tried but not convicted on criminal charges after the incident.
