JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- The Washington County Board of Education has given a $700,000 check to the Circuit Court Clerk's office so a judge can determine how the money will be distributed among the 39 student victims of a recent school bus crash.
The Johnson City Press reports state law caps governmental agencies' liability at $700,000 for injury or death for everyone involved in a single incident.
Several students suffered life threatening injuries on Sept. 20 when driver Brenda Gray lost control of the bus and it went off the road, rolling once.
Gray is charged with reckless aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, speeding, reckless driving and failure to exercise due care.
If the money were distributed equally among the victims, each would receive a little less than $18,000.
