Shelby ballot problems being discussed

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- State election officials have assured Democratic members of the legislature that voting problems Aug. 2 were mostly confined to Shelby County.

The Commercial Appeal reported the legislators and state election officials exchanged letters on Tuesday about poll problems.

Shelby County elections administrator Richard Holden said he would respond Wednesday to the Tennessee Secretary of State's Office, answering questions posed by state Election Coordinator Mark Goins.

Voter difficulties cropped up during early voting and on election day on ballots that contained party primaries, local general elections and referendums.

In Shelby County, nearly 3,200 voters received incorrect ballots.

A letter to Secretary of State Tre Hargett asking about problems statewide was signed by 25 of the 34 Democrats in the state House or Representatives.
