Sheriff: Laurel couple used daughter as lookout while they shoplifted

LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Police say the Childress motive isn’t quite clear. But police say social services were called because of who was with them during the theft.

“And apparently their 11-year-old child was the lookout for the mother and father to do their shoplifting,” said Gilbert Acciardo with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office.

Margaret and James Childress were taken to the Laurel County Jail where they spent the night. Both declined jailhouse interviews Friday morning, but later Margaret called WKYT and denied that their daughter was the so called “lookout” for their crime.

“My kids were not even around me. They usually go back to electronics and play with the computers and everything. My husband and I take full responsibility for what we did. But my children are hysterical right now because they had nothing to do with it,” she said over the phone.

Police say the Childress’ are just the latest in what’s been a big problem. They say they receive 8 to 10 calls a week from loss prevention officers at the Corbin store alone.

“Eventually you think you’re going to run out of people who are going to be shoplifting. Isn’t the word going to get out, don’t go to Wal-mart in Corbin to shoplift,” said Childress.

Police say social services were called to place the children, but Marget Childress said the children spent the time they were in jail with their grandparents.
