Sheriff: homicide odd; victim, suspect strangers

BELLS, Tenn. (AP) -- Authorities in West Tennessee say a homicide in Bells is unusual in that the victim did not know the suspect.

Antonio Toomes of Ripley is under indictment on charges of first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and especially aggravated burglary in the fatal shooting of Matthew McKnight whose mother found him dead in the family's home on Oct. 18.

Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce told The Jackson Sun that in every other homicide he has encountered, the victim and the attacker knew each other in some way.

Authorities believe the 40-year-old McKnight struggled with the 29-year-old Toomes when he found Toomes burglarizing his home.

Toomes is held without bond in the shooting. TBI officials said Toomes was in the Lauderdale County Jail when he was indicted in Crockett County.
