State convict pleads guilty to federal crimes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A Shelby County man serving life in prison in the killing of his wife has pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges.

Joseph Caronna entered pleas Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Memphis. The Commercial Appeal reported Caronna consented to forfeiting nearly $699,000 in assets that include several vehicles and bank accounts. The 48-year-old Caronna entered pleas to charges of mail fraud, insurance fraud and money laundering.

Caronna was convicted in state court in October 2012 in the suffocation killing of his 44-year-old wife, Tina Caronna.

The government said Caronna stole $788,000 from his clients between 2001 and 2009.

He will be sentenced in May in the financial crimes. A judge will decide whether the sentence will be concurrent or consecutive to the state prison term.
