State prisoner charged with killing wife in 1986

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- A Tennessee prison inmate has been indicted in the killing of his wife 25 years ago.

According to The Daily News Journal, a Rutherford County grand jury returned a first-degree murder indictment against 63-year-old Moses Bess. The indictment was announced on Monday. It charged Bess with fatally shooting 38-year-old Deborah Sherfield Hulett Bess at the couple's home on Aug. 19, 1986.

The charge follows a yearlong investigation by Rutherford County Sheriff's Office cold case detectives.

Detective Sgt. Dan Goodwin said Monday the department received new information last year about the death of Deborah Bess.

Moses Bess is completing a 15-year prison term after he pleaded guilty in 1998 to four counts of child rape. He is scheduled for release in September 2013.

The newspaper said Moses Bess' family declined comment.
