State pulling prisoners out of county jail

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. (AP/WVLT) -- The state is pulling inmates from the overcrowded and de-certified Coffee County Jail.

Sheriff Steve Graves says that 28 state inmates are supposed to be picked up on Monday and another five will be picked up later this week.

The county jail was designed to house 196 inmates but on Friday it had 254.

Graves said the reduction will help with the overcrowding, but the county will also lose the money it has been earning for housing state prisoners.

Coffee County has begun the process of building a new jail and recently chose a tract of land for the site.
