MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- City officials and business representatives will celebrate the start of construction on a seven-year effort to turn The Pyramid arena in downtown Memphis into a tourist and retail-sport destination.
The Commercial Appeal reports the invitation only "construction kick-off celebration" to be held Thursday will include the founder and president of Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris.
The company plans to build a theme park-like store that will include a hotel, a Delta cypress tree swamp, a bowling alley, a zip line and an indoor marina where people can test boats and kayaks for sale.
Demolition work to remove bleachers and walls has been completed, and the city has to perform seismic improvements to the building.
