Storms close roads, cancel classes

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT)- Major power outages, lots of widespread damage and other issues still plague Knoxville and Knox County after last night's storms.

Large portions of the area are still in the dark as KUB works to get things back to normal. The utility provider says they're doing everything they can.

“Last night was a long night for our public works crews, and they’re going to continue working today to make sure that Knox County’s roads are safe. I appreciate the hard work that they do for Knox County,” County Mayor Tim Burchett said. “Roads are one thing, but homes are another. Many of our neighbors are suffering from extensive storm damage, and, as neighbors, we should help where we can and also keep those families in our prayers.”

According to Mayor Burchett's office, 20 roads are closed because trees are down into power lines. Engineering & Public Works crews will be able to clear the debris once KUB confirms the lines are turned off. (see full list below)

Knoxville police said officers were directing traffic at 12 intersections in north and west Knoxville as of 10:30 a.m. They also wanted to remind drivers to slow down when approaching an intersection where the lights are out and to treat it as a four-way stop.

The roof at Whittle Springs Middle School was heavily damaged. Twisted tin lay partly on the ground after strong winds ripped it off the building. No one was at the school at the time, and summer classes for Wednesday were canceled.

All classes at Historic Knoxville High and the Dr. Paul L. Kelley Volunteer Academy will be canceled for the remainder of the week (through Friday, June 24, 2011) due to issues with electrical power.

Alice Bell Baptist Church in Knoxville is canceling Wednesday night services.
