Student planned to peel apple, was suspended

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A student who intended to peel an apple at Germantown High School has been suspended.

The issue wasn't the apple, but a two-inch paring knife brought to school.

The Commercial Appeal cited a Germantown Police report that stated the student intended to peel the fruit at lunch on Monday. Police were called and the student was arrested.

Shelby County Schools spokesman Mike Tebbe said making exceptions to the "zero tolerance" policy is not in the best interest of safety for all concerned.

Only the school superintendent could modify the year suspension mandated by the policy.
