MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) -- The former Middle Tennessee State University student charged with murder in the stabbing death of her roommate has testified that she was scared and in pain when she grabbed the knife during a fight.
Shanterrica Madden testified on Saturday that Lady Raiders basketball player Tina Stewart was beating her up and would not let her leave Stewart's bedroom.
Madden cried on the stand as she recalled the fight that happened after Stewart called a courtesy officer on Madden for smoking marijuana in the apartment.
Madden said she can't explain why she did not call 911 when Stewart fell to the floor. Sobbing, Madden said she was sorry and that Stewart might still be alive if she had acted to help her.
Madden has claimed self defense.
