Students Act As Sheriff

ATHENS, Tenn. (WVLT) -- On Wednesday, students from McMinn Central and McMinn County High Schools participated in Youth Government Day, where groups of students were sworn-in to various elected and appointed offices for the day to observe and learn about county government.

Five students who were sworn into the office of Sheriff accompanied Sheriff Joe Guy on a tour of the courthouse and jail, participated in a problem solving session on jail overcrowding issues, and observed a large drug/cash seizure.

Student Government Day is sponsored by the Athens Elks Lodge, the McMinn County Board of Education, and McMinn County Government.

Student Sheriff’s are, from left, Jordan Roach, Taylor Thompson, Chelsey Wier, Jordan Gaines, and Shelby Knox.
