Student's dress keeps her out of senior prom

JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- A high school senior from West Tennessee says she was turned away from her prom because of her dress, which had elements of the Confederate battle flag.

Texanna Edwards told The Jackson Sun officials of Gibson County High School told her the dress was "offensive and inappropriate" when she and her date arrived for the dance on Saturday. She was not allowed to attend.

The dress is red and has crossed blue bands that contain rows of white stars.

Gibson County Special School District Superintendent Eddie Pruett said a teacher cautioned the 18-year-old Edwards two months ago that the dress might not be acceptable.

Pruett said there have been racial issues at the school in recent years and Principal James Hughes felt the dress could have caused more.
