Suspicious fire burns big old tobacco warehouse

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Fire inspectors continue to search for the cause of a fire that destroyed a former tobacco warehouse in Johnson City.

According to the Johnson City Press, authorities are suspicious because there was no electrical service to the 100,000-square-foot building. There was initial concern that someone might have been inside because homeless people sometimes took shelter in the building, but firefighters found no indication anyone was there.

The blaze was reported shortly after noon on Sunday.

Johnson City Assistant Fire Chief Mark Finucane described it as a very hot fire that damaged a fire engine and rained ash as far as five miles away.

The newspaper reported the building was believed to have been the last remaining tobacco warehouse in Johnson City.
