Teen charged with killing principal in court

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- A 16-year-old boy accused of stabbing his school principal has made his first court appearance since being indicted on first-degree murder charges.

Eduardo Marmolejo replied "Yes" when asked by Criminal Court Judge Otis Higgs on Wednesday if he understands the charge against him.

The court appearance was brief because Marmolejo's defense attorney was not present. The arraignment likely will be rescheduled.

The teen has been charged as an adult in the fatal stabbing of 49-year old Suzette York. She was Marmolejo's principal at the private Memphis Junior Academy.

York's body was found in a pool of blood in a classroom on the third day of school last August. An autopsy showed she had cuts to her head and neck.

Marmolejo was indicted last week.
