Temperatures at freezing across much of Tennessee

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) -- With freeze warnings and frost advisories across nearly all of Tennessee, some extraordinary precautions are being taken to save crops.

Near Franklin, Arrington Vineyards hired helicopters to circle over the grape vines, hoping the rotor wash would bring down enough slightly warmer air to keep the grapes from freezing.

The practice call crop warming is common among citrus growers in Florida.

Vineyard president Kip Summers told WTVF-TV some ice had formed on plants.

If the vineyard lost its crop, it would have to bring in grapes from elsewhere to make its wine and other Tennessee vineyards were having a similar problem early Thursday. The freeze warning for Middle Tennessee was posted until 8 a.m.
