Tenn. teen, used as human shield and stabbed, leaves hospital

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- A 16-year-old Tennessee girl who police say was used as a shield and stabbed by a homeless man in a Pittsburgh Target store has been released from the hospital.

Family members tell local media that Allison Meadows of Chattanooga left UPMC Children's Hospital on Thursday morning. She suffered a collapsed lung and other wounds in Monday's stabbing.

The family says Meadows was on spring break and in Pittsburgh to visit her young nephew, who underwent a triple organ transplant last year. She ended up at the same hospital where the boy had been treated.

Meadows says the experience was "crazy and traumatic" but she's doing well.

Police say a 41-year-old man wielding a knife ran into the store after a fight nearby. He's jailed on attempted homicide and other charges.
